Bent, but not broken. This was Rome emerging from the harsh years of the Second World War. A city deeply scarred by the violence of war and the brutal Nazi occupation. A city that had to grapple with food shortages and a lack of housing for its inhabitants yet was once again breathing the fresh air of freedom.
This volume retraces the history of those years, telling the story of a social, political, and above all cultural and moral rebirth. Between 1944 and 1960, the year Rome hosted the Olympic Games, the city rebuilt itself and experienced an economic revival. The essays in this volume narrate that history and, together with the photographic appendix, offers us the image of a city that, despite immense challenges, found the strength to reclaim its place in the world.
